Professional Development for Indigenous Artists Course

PAFNW is pleased to announce the first intake of our Professional Development for Indigenous Artists Course. We are excited to be offering a 7-week long program with classes held online on Zoom each Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm PDT, from October 13th to November 24th 2021.

This course aims to guide Indigenous artists through holistic, spiritual, and decolonial practices of engaging with the “art world” and supporting oneself as an artist.

Enrolment is open to Indigenous artists of all skill levels residing in British Columbia. Registration is limited to 24 students with preference given to emerging artists. This course is provided at no cost to students. Students will receive a living wage subsidy of $45 per session for each class attended. This course is generously funded by First Peoples’ Cultural Council.

Course Outline:

Week 1- October 13, 2021: Welcome Circle

  • Opening ceremony with Coast Salish Artist Elder, orientation & introductions
  • Painting exercise 

Week 2 – October 20, 2021: Self Expression & Self Presentation

  • Portfolio building
  • Drawing exercise 

Week 3 – October 27, 2021: Self Reflection & Self Awareness

  • Artist bio & artist statement writing
  • Journaling exercise 

Week 4 – November 3, 2021: Self Worth & Inherent Value

  • Creating a C.V. & pricing your work
  • Breath and vocal exercise 

Week 5 – November 10, 2021: Connection & Sense of Belonging

  • Applying for exhibitions & residencies
  • Networking, collaboration & mentorship
  • Movement exercise 

Week 6 – November 17, 2021: Manifesting Prayers into Reality

  • Grant Proposal Writing
  • Visualization meditation exercise 

Week 7 – November 24, 2021: Closing Celebration 

  • Closing Ceremony with Coast Salish Artist Elder
  • Optional student final presentations
  • Course evaluation & self assessment
